If you’re driving to work one morning only to find your car AC not working, you might be in for an uncomfortably warm ride. There are several ways in which a car’s air-con system might run into trouble. Let’s take a look at the most common issues and the causes behind them. Whatever the problem, you can have your AC promptly repaired at your local Subaru dealership.

Only Blowing Warm Air

If air’s blowing from the AC vents as usual but refuses to blow cold, the system may have a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant is the substance that generates coldness as it circulates through the AC pipes and parts. If this refrigerant ever leaks from a crack in a hose or connection, or from the evaporator, compressor, or condenser, then the entire cooling process will be interrupted.

Refrigerant is a thin, transparent, oily substance that’s difficult to spot with the naked eye. To find a refrigerant leak, a technician will often inject a special fluorescent leak tracer dye into the system, which makes leaks visible under the shine of a blacklight.

No Air Blowing At All

The blower motor is responsible for pumping the AC’s cooled air into your cabin. If the blower motor or blower resistor develops a fault, you won’t be getting the cool air you need.

Other faults might also cause the air to stop flowing into the cabin, such as a blocked air intake or a blown fuse. Damage to the belts and hoses could also cause the same problem.

AC Air Smells Strange

When a car’s air-con is left unused for months at a time, it’s possible for mold and fungi to build up inside the system. This bacterial growth will then cause an unpleasant smell to blow into your cabin once the AC is turned on again.

You may be able to resolve this problem with a new air filter, which can catch the bacterial particles. If this doesn’t work, have a technician clean the system for you.

Odd Sounds From the AC

An AC system should be smooth and quiet when turned on. If you ever hear a strange rattling or banging sound, you might have a leaf or some other debris trapped inside the system. A more serious problem such as worn-out bearings or a failed compressor switch might also generate odd sounds.

Water Dripping From the AC

Condensation tends to build up in most air conditioners. Your car will have a drain line that allows this condensation to run harmlessly out of your car. If this drain line becomes clogged by a buildup of bacterial growth or some debris, the water will have nowhere to go. As a result, it might start dripping into your cabin from under your dashboard.
